While having a good foundation in STEM knowledge of the science, math, nature and basic engineering is important for K-8 teachers, it is equally important to know how to create hand-on, authentic and inclusive learning activities for your students. A lesson planning framework known as (STEM)2 was developed to help K-12 teachers design more diverse and inclusive lesson plans that transform student's concepts of STEM in fundamental ways.  Each of the elements illustrated in (STEM)2 above is (STEM)2 lesson framework provides teachers an educational structure for enhancing your lesson plans that we will be exploring in class. However, the (STEM)2 framework has been summarized in the educational poster above and will be discussed in several PowerPoints during our course.

Utah Connections: Getting to Know the STEM Action Center

Founded in 2013, the STEM Action Center is a fantastic resource for both teachers and schools. This organization provides educational resources, programs and special events for schools throughout Utah including the Washington County School District. The STEM Action Center also certifies STEM K-12 schools that focus on integrating STEM across the curriculum. To find out more click the image or link below.

Reflection QuestionsUse these guiding questions to help frame your understanding of (STEM)2 for our class discussions:
  1. Why is it important to know how to teach STEM to your students?
  2. What does society, transformative, exceptional and multicultural mean within (STEM)2 ?
  3. Consider a lesson you want to teach related to STEM, how would you use (STEM)2 in your planning?

Edtech & AI ChallengeAfter viewing the video and reading the short articles, use your favorite AI Program to write a summary of the following prompts:
  1. Create of list of five ways elementary teachers can improve their science and engineering skills with examples of each.
  2. Create a list of two elementary teaching STEM resources in the United States and two elementary teaching resources in Utah for new teachers with links and a brief description of each resource.
Did the suggestions a match what we have been learning in class? Do you have any different ideas or strategies on understanding children's science and engineering conceptions and ideas?
