Section #4: Science Topics for Module 2 - Practical Chemistry for K-8 Students

An important aspect of this course for K-8 educators is a basic review of STEM. In Module 2 we are going to explore chemistry and basic atomic structures related to the properties and states of matter). It should be noted that this is an introduction and not comprehensive review of science. Articles and other resources are included here to help increase your conception of the science explored in this module.

Key Terms in Science:
By the end of this science review you should be able to define, discuss and apply the following key terms within your educational practice:
chemistry, atoms, matter, energy, transfer, chemical model, conservation of energy/matter, measurement, mass, density, volume.

Crash Course offers some great videos on chemistry for elementary students. Below is an example from their series.

Here are two articles from NSTA that can lead to elementary science lessons related to chemistry:

NSTA Lessons: Liquid Layers– Article Link

Science Curriculum Search
Explore the science curriculum in the Utah SEEd standards. Search for: chemistry, atoms, matter, energy, transfer, chemical model, conservation of energy/matter, measurement, mass, density, volume. What did you find at the grades you want to teach? We will be discussing this in more detail in class. As an extension, compare Utah's science standard with the science curriculum in another state you might want to teach in. The link for Utah's SEEd is here: LinkLinks to an external site.  (Links to an external site.)

Reflection QuestionsAfter viewing the videos and reading the articles, consider these reflection questions for our class discussion:
  1. How can you teach the concept of chemistry at the grade level of students you want to work with.
  2. Consider the previous section on STEM safety, what risks and safety considerations should we consider when running chemical experiments in our classrooms?
  3. How would you connect your lessons on chemistry and other forces to your students lives? How do you make your lesson real for your students?

Edtech & AI ChallengeAfter reading the short articles, use your favorite AI Program to write a summary of the following prompts:
  1. Create of list of five things to consider when teaching elementary science lessons with food that also includes a brief rationale (2-3 sentences) for each one AI identifies.
  2. Create two 25 minute elementary science lessons using food that also includes UEN SEEd standards and includes a safety plan.
Did the suggestions a match what we have been learning in class about practical chemistry and the safe use of foods in elementary science experiments? Do you have any different ideas or strategies for teaching practical chemistry or using foods in class activities?
