Module 2: Safety in National & State Curriculum in STEM Education

Module Overview: In the second module we will be exploring state and national curriculum standards in more detail as we begin creating our STEM activities. We will also be introducing the (STEM)2 framework for lesson planning and development. (STEM)2 stands combines STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) with planning areas (Society, Transformative, Exceptional, and Multicultutural) for inclusive lesson design. In addition to the (STEM)2 framework, we will be analyzing the benefits of cross-disciplinary and thematic learning for K-8 students and identifying strategies for teaching STEM across the curriculum. Finally, we will be exploring practical chemistry for K-8 students.

Module Objectives:
  1. Explore and apply the (STEM)2 framework for lesson planning and design.
  2. Understand how to assess risk and create safety plans for STEM lessons and activities.
  3. Continue conducting research into state and national Science standards and resources.

Key Terms:
By the end of this module you should be able to define, discuss and apply the following key terms within your educational practice:
(STEM)2 framework, society connections, transformative learning, exceptional accommodations, multiculutral inclusion, disciplinary science and thematic learning

Module Sections:
  • Section #1: What is the (STEM)2 Framework?
  • Section #2: National and Utah Science & Engineering Standards (copy from Module 1)
  • Section #3: Science Safety in the K-8 Classroom
  • Section #4: Science Review for Module 2 - Practical Chemistry

Module Assignments & Timeline:
  • Week #4: Start Reading Module 2 and start SEEd Toolbox Area 3 - Science Safety Plan
  • Week #5: Read Sec 3 & 4 and Complete SEEd Toolbox Area 3 (Safety Plan) & Area 4 (Module 1-2 Review) & Module 1-2 Quiz.
