Module 5: Science Fairs & Community Sharing in STEM Education

Module Overview:In the fifth and final module we will be exploring science fairs and community sharing in STEM education. There are many ways to build and effective STEM learning community in your classroom. We will be examining different models of community sharing including the use of traditional and alternative science fairs. Class museums are also an excellent way for teachers and students to explore and build STEM learning centers that can be shared with other classes in the school and families. In addition to STEM learning communities, this module will be exploring how elementary classrooms can partner with museums, nature centers and other STEM organizations which blends formal (K-12 STEM) with informal (museums and STEM organizations) education. Teachers should consider informal STEM educators and other STEM professionals as both partners and mentors in the process of enhancing elementary STEM within the classroom and community. You will be completing an e-STEM activity to find online resources such as: games, websites, articles, reference tools, virtual models and other electronic STEM resources fo your future classroom.
In addition to STEM partnerships and learning communities, we will be continuing our exploration of biology with an examination of body systems and health education.

Module Objectives:
  1. Explore the educational value of building STEM learning centers and forging community partnerships with STEM organizations in your community such as museums and science centers.
  2. Review body systems and basic health education for the elementary grades.
  3. Complete an e-STEM activity to identify electronic resources you might choose to use in future classrooms. .
