Professional Experience
2019-Current: Professor of Elementary & STEM Education, Utah Tech University, St. George, Utah. I am currently an elementary science and STEM professor with UTU's (Utah Technological University) Department of Education to teach elementary science education and other courses at the university. In addition to teaching courses and advising undergraduate students, I am working with the faculty and university to develop science education programs and partnerships within St. George and the surrounding communities. My mobile research research initiative has started at UTU as well. This is an exciting culmination of all my hard work in Canada and the United States and I look forward to being immersed in science and STEM education/research in both countries.
2016-2019: Educational Researcher and Graduate Supervisor, Vancouver Island University (VIU), Nanaimo, BC. In addition to teaching courses at VIU in Nanaimo British Columbia, I supervised graduate students as they complete their master’s degrees in education, leadership, and English as a second language. I also completed a university funded educational research project examining children's mobile learning initiatives for informal science educators at the Deep Bay Marine Research Field Station which was presented in Vancouver at the 2019 CSSE (Canadian Society for the Study of Education) conference. My research will continue at DSU as noted above.
2010-2018: Doctoral Candidate and Sessional Instructor, University of Victoria (UVIC), Victoria, BC. In addition to completing my dissertation on mobile learning within natural history museums and science centres, I was a sessional instructor and research assistant within the Faculty of Education. I taught educational courses in the following areas: science education, environmental education, interactive/multimedia design, and the history of Canadian education. My work as a research assistant revolves around the use of iPads in math and science. I was also involved in the Pacific CRYSTAL project to work on curriculum related to the BC Year of Science.
2007-2010: Environmental Science Faculty Member, Axia College, Phoenix, AZ. Part time online undergraduate environmental science professor where I teach about freshwater, terrestrial, and marine ecosystems, solid and hazardous waste management, risk assessment, and alternative energies/sustainable design.
2004-2010: ESL Faculty Member, Emerson School, Grand Junction, Colorado. I was an K-8 ESL language specialist for students in Mesa County School District #51. I primarily taught students at Nisley Elementary School. In addition to children’s programming, I coordinated bilingual parent nights and recruited families for ESL and community literacy programs and related events (i.e. immigrant rights in education).
2003-2004: Faculty Member, The American School of Chiapas, Tuxtla Gutierez, Mexico. 4-6th grade math and science teacher at the American School of Chiapas. Designed and taught 4-6th grade curriculum to a 100% ESL population. Provided instruction and assistance in both Spanish and English. Designed and built a $5,000 science learning center for ASC.
2000-2003 Faculty Member, The Aspen Community School, Woody Creek, Colorado. 5-8th grade teacher at an alternative public charter school. Designed a student centered and thematic curriculum. Taught all subjects with an emphasis in math and science. Organized a cultural immersion experience for 8th grade students to Chiapas, Mexico where students studied the Spanish language, Mayan and Mexican culture and performed community service work. Team taught a thematic science and outdoor education unit in Yellowstone National Park around the park’s gray wolf recovery program.
1998-2000: Master in Teaching Graduate Student, The Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington. Extensive focus in multicultural and holistic education (with an emphasis on Native American children). Developed student centered learning curriculum in the natural and environmental sciences while student teaching at the WaHeLut Indian School where I helped WaHeLut build and develop a media lab and student run television studio.
1997-1998: Education Director, Wolf Haven International, Olympia, Washington. Designed, managed, and led many of the educational programs for the Education Department at Wolf Haven International. Projects include the 1998 International Children’s Wolf Congress (six hundred K-8 students), a Howl-in lecture series, grant writing (raised $12, 000 in grants and donations) for new educational displays, and articles for a quarterly magazine entitled Wolftracks. Trained and oversaw a volunteer education program.
1993-1995: Master of Environmental Studies Graduate Student, The Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington. I arranged and organized activities for the graduate program including the Annual Rachel Carson Forum, The Wild Salmon Restoration Conference, and the Master of Environmental Studies Lecture Series.
