Vancouver Island University EDTE 523: Methods - Language Acquisition
In addition to science education, I taught English Language Learners for many years. This is a methods course that explores language acquisition for pre-service educators. The course description states:
"A study of the various theories of language acquisition and their application to teaching a second language or to teaching second language learners in the classroom setting. Students are required to demonstrate competence in a language other than English to the level of a beginning (conversational) language learner."

University of Victoria EDCI 403: Curriculum and Instruction in Elementary or Middle School Science
Elementary science education is often overlooked in many elementary classrooms. Not with this course. Here, I teach pre-service educators how to integrated hands on science throughout the curriculum. The course description states:
"A study of the curriculum organization, instructional strategies, and assessment practices in elementary or middle school science. Includes consideration of the nature of science, the interactions of science, technology, society and environment, and the content, processes and attitudes prescribed in the provincial curriculum."

University of Victoria EDCI 454: Environmental Education
This is one of my most favourite and innovative courses to teach for pre-service educators. The course description states:
"This multidisciplinary course is designed to familiarize the educator with a range of issues and teaching methods related to environmental education. Topics include goals for environmental and outdoor education; environmental ethics; current issues and trends; multicultural perspectives towards the land; local, national and global issues, teaching strategies for understanding and resolving environmental issues; program and unit planning. Selected field trips to locations emphasizing current environmental issues."

University of Victoria EDCI 337: Interactive and Multimedia Learning
This is an upper division course that explores the important role digital and mobile technologies are playing in a wide range of academic fields and activities. The course description states:
"An introduction to the theory and application of multimedia learning in interactive learning environments. Students will explore the latest research and discover some best practices for creating rich educational experiences. Students will have the opportunity to design and develop interactive learning experiences using such technologies as touch input devices, tablets, interactive white boards, virtual worlds and augmented reality."

Axia College SCI 275: Environmental Science
This is an online introductory science course for first and second year post-secondary students. It covers a wide range of topics related to environmental science including; ecology, environmental risks, health, and large scale issues such as climate change. The course description states:

Special Topics in Education: History, Philosophy and Education in Parks, Museums and Galleries (designed but not taught)
The history, philosophy and educational development of museum, park and public galleries in North America is both complex and diverse. In this course students have the opportunity to explore the origin and evolution of informal education in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

Special Topics in Education: Bicycles, Backpacks & Canoes - Outdoor Education, Safety and Planning in Wilderness Settings (designed but not taught)
This summer introductory course to outdoor and wilderness education allows students to learn the skills to safely plan and organize wilderness and bicycling trips in Canada. Trip planning, logistics, safety/risk assessment, and activity design form the foundation of this intensive two week course.
